My Adoption Story

My name is Carla. I was born in Korea on January 1, 1969, and adopted by a Dutch couple when I was 13 months old. After spending four months in an orphanage in Seoul, I began my life in the Netherlands.

I am of mixed heritage (Hapa), with a Korean mother and an American father. My mother worked near a military base in Korea, and my father was a U.S. soldier. This background remained a mystery for many years, and understanding my origins has been a complex journey.

Adoption brought challenges, including a strong sense of wanting to belong. Dance and singing became important outlets for me to process and express myself. Over time, I was fortunate to turn this passion into my career, creating a space on stage where I could connect with others.

For the past 35 years, I have been searching for my biological parents. I traveled to Korea several times in this effort, and a Korean TV documentary was made about my journey. Despite the challenges, I eventually found my biological father, who shared valuable insights about my family history. He told me that my mother had moved to Hawaii and that I likely have a half-brother living in the U.S.

This discovery has given my search new direction, and I remain hopeful about reconnecting with my family.
